A "Just Because" Portrait: Celebrate Yourself Now

Not every portrait needs a business purpose. Sometimes, the best reason to have professional photos taken is simply because you deserve it. I love it when people celebrate themselves—who they are right now—by stepping in front of the camera, not for work, not for an event, but just because.

But too often, people put it off. They say, "I just need to lose a little weight first," or "Maybe for my fortieth, or sixtieth." I promise you the perfect moment will never come. You are who you are now. You are perfect now.

The Myth of the "Perfect Time"

One of the most common things I hear is, "I'll do it when…" When they’ve lost weight. When they feel more confident. When they have a special occasion. But the truth is, life is happening now. The version of yourself that exists today is worth celebrating.

There will always be reasons to wait. There will always be something you wish was different. But waiting only means missing out on capturing this chapter of your life. The person you are today—flaws, insecurities, and all—is just as valuable and worthy of being photographed as the person you hope to become.

Legacy: The Gift of Being Seen

Portraits are more than just images. They are part of your story. They are part of your legacy.

Think about the photographs of your grandparents or parents. Those images hold meaning because they show who they were, their expressions, and their presence. When we look at them, we don’t see imperfections—we see love, connection, and a piece of history.

Your future self—and your loved ones—will treasure the photos of you just as much. A portrait isn’t just for today; it’s for the people who will look back at it years from now and see the real you.

Overcoming Procrastination

We all put things off, and it’s easy to push a portrait session to the bottom of the list. But consider this: If you make time for work meetings, gym sessions, social events, and even dentist appointments, why not make time for something that celebrates you?

Taking a portrait is an act of self-appreciation. It’s a moment to pause, recognize your own worth, and capture yourself as you are—right now, in this season of life.

Do It Now, and Do It Regularly

I believe in documenting life as it happens, which is why I have my own portraits taken regularly. Not for any specific reason—just because. It’s a way to honour my journey, to acknowledge my own growth, and to remind myself that I don’t need an excuse to be seen.

Portraits aren’t just about how you look. They’re about who you are. And that is always worth celebrating.
